Dieter Sibold, Ph.D.
Dr. Dieter Sibold holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Technische Universitat Braunschweig in Braunschweig, Germany. Since 1993, Dr. Sibold has held several
positions at Physikalisch-Technische Bundesantalt (PTB). The PTB is legally responsible for time dissemination in Germany. Traditionally, this was –
and still is – accomplished via a long wave radio transmitter (DCF77). In 1998 PTB’s management decided to supplement this service with an internet
based service. Dr. Sibold holds the responsibility for the maintenance and development of this service. He has worked in PTB’s Department of
Information Technology, and served as Quality Manager of PTB’s IT Infrastructure Body.
In 2010, working in conjunction with the German government’s smart grid initiative, Dr. Sibold supervised a security analysis of NTP and autokey. As
a result of these efforts, he is currently engaged in the definition of a new security protocol for NTP that ensures the authenticity and integrity of
NTP. In addition to his continuing work at PTB, Dr. Sibold has been participating in the IETF’s NTP working group since 2011. He joined the NTF
Technical Advisory Board in 2012.
